PRESENT:
The meeting of the Great Lakes Region was called to order by Regional Director Liz Watson. In the absence of Regional Secretary Rachel Anger, the minutes were taken by Susan Johnson. Regional Treasury: There is $94 left over from Kevin Pfister for Special Account; $535 from Saturday gate; $465 from Saturday raffle. There is currently approximately $30,000 in checking account. Kevin thanked five clubs who allowed raffles: Mid-Michigan (two shows); Mohawk Trail; Royal Canadian; Peace Bridge Aby Fanciers. We raised $780 from lunch for exhibitors on Saturday at the Qualifier. 2000 Regional Show: Buffalo proposed a show in Hamburg, New York. They offer the following: three different hotels allow cats; very spacious hall; free parking; at least two banquet possibilities. Chip Conn made a motion to go with the Buffalo proposal, seconded by Frank Troklas and passed. Bev O'Neill will work on reservations for 1999 banquet for experience for the 2000 Regional Show. Paul Ruzinsky recommended continuity between Regional staff and the host club, with half the proceeds going to club and half to Region. Regional staff to work with sponsoring club. Martha Auspitz brought up regional guidelines and will e-mail them to Liz, and will go in Newsletter. Paul's proposal was tabled. Norm Auspitz will e-mail to individuals and Karen Lawrence will include in the Great Lakes Region website. Regional Raffle: Kevin Pfister and Nancy Mikita. Regional Show Judges: Do we want to change the format and have out-of region judges? The format for 1999 is 4 Allbreed, 2 Specialty rings. Report on Canadian Dollar Dispairity: CFA will not change "coin of the realm" in Show Rules. North Atlantic Region takes Canadian exchange rate. Eldon Smith is working on a proposal. 2001 Annual Delegate Bags: Evelyn Forster, Bev O'Neill, Vickie Lanham and Wilma Van Scoyk will undertake this project. Report from Vendor Spokesman: Chip Conn mentioned that there is not enough gate and number of exhibitors, too many similar vendors, too many shows. Jerry with Jerob says (1) that dropping counts is a major concern; (2) too many competing shows too close together; (3) lack of new faces exhibiting. Vickie Lanham suggested adding a support group for clubs. These should be directed to the Mentoring Program c/o Marg Baird. We should also make a note on the flyer to inform the entry clerk of being a first-time exhibitor. Clubs try to have a good mix to help vendors, exhibitors and attractive to gate. We should encourage clubs to advertise so they get many vendors, etc. Newsletter Articles: Please submit anything of interest to Diane Crowe. E-mail Joe DeLaFranier for maintenace and send to Karen. (Note: Update: Email articles of interest directly to Liz Watson) Great Lakes Regional Handbook: New Scoring Proposals: This was sent out by Tom Dent and will be in the Newsletter. Low Entries for Qualifier: Entries are down all over the region. Some weekends we have two shows in the Region. Some people are not going to the International. Too many shows in the same area at one time. We need to focus on breeds at the International. Some clubs have more than one show per year. New Business: Proposal to begin Annual Meeting on Thursday and have the meeting Thursday and Friday. Linda Komar proposed moving the Qualifier. We should make it accessible to everybody. She suggested keeping it along the Lake Erie area. Paul Ruzinsky made a motion to table for 90 days where the 1999 Qualifier will be, which was seconded and passed. Regional Boundaries: Buffalo wishes to remain in the Great Lakes Region. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan to move to the Midwest region. Clubs were asked to fax show flyers to Karen Lawrence for the web site and to be added to the Regional Calendar. Regional Show Staff: Eric and Judy Thompson will be entry clerks, do benching and the schedule. Wilma Van Scoyk will do trophies. Eve Russell will do rosettes. Susan Johnson will be show treasurer. Final Notes: It was discussed that we should have more raffles for the region, and that we should try to include everyone. It was suggested that we have a band at the Regional Banquet, and that the price for the dinner should be lower. Half the proceeds from the show should go to the Region, and half to the sponsoring club. Regional assessments are coming in, thanks to the hard work of Susan Johnson. She needs to know if the club secretary or treasurer gets the bill. Clubs are reminded to send their show catalogs to the Regional Director at the close of their show. Back to Regional Meeting List
