MINUTES OF GREAT LAKES REGIONAL MEETING

In accordance with the Notice mailed to all Great Lakes Region clubs, published on the Great Lakes Region's internet page and announced at the Monroe Mid-Michigan show, a meeting of the Great Lakes Region was convened at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, July 18, 1998 by Regional Director Liz Watson, followed by an ovation of the members in attendance in honor of our newly-elected Regional Director. Regional Director Watson distributed a Regional Meeting Agenda and proceeded with busi-ness according thereto, noting 25 attendees representing approximately 40 Region 4 clubs.
  1. Treasurer's Report. The Great Lakes Region is solvent and owns a Certificate of Deposit.

  2. Qualifier Report. At this time, everything is under control for our Qualifier. We still need three sides of specialty rings at $100 per side. If you or your club can contribute, please contact Eve Russell. Also, Eve will take donations of red/white/blue rosettes, or any combination thereof, for recycling purposes.

  3. Assessments. Statements have been sent to all clubs that are delinquent in their regional assessments. The issue of the existing disparity between the U.S. dollar and Canadian dollar was brought up. Upon motion by Eve Russell and seconded by Faye Mullins, discussion ensued regarding consideration to giving Canadian clubs a 25¢ break on their regional assessment on a temporary basis. Brenda Woods mentioned that U.S. exhibitors who pay their entry fees in U.S. funds are always appreciated, as the Canadian clubs have to pay their expenses in U.S. dollars. Kevin Pfister called the question and the motion passed unanimously. Upon motion by Eldon Smith, seconded by Faye Mullins and unanimously carried, it was resolved that a committee be formed to explore the issue further, with Eldon to head the Committee.

  4. Committees and Positions. Director Watson noted that we still need people to head and/or serve on committees. The existing regional committees are as follows:
    (a) Regional Fund-Raising Committee - facilitate fund-raising for regional and qualifier shows. Seek sponsorships for 2001 Annual.
    (b) Regional Animal Welfare Committee - assist with implementation of Welfare program guidelines. Initial investigation of animal abuse reports.
    (c) Regional Mentoring Committee - assist with implementation of guidelines of CFA Mentoring Program. Develop network to encourage new breeders and exhibitors. Develop list of breeders and exhibitors who will share time and expertise with new people. Encourage breeders to follow through when they sell cats.
    (d) Regional Legislative Network - assist CFA Legislative Committee. Watch-dog for animal legislations within the region. Marshaling of information to address legislation.
    (e) Regional E-Mail Listing - compile and maintain e-mail listing for better communication.
    (f) Regional Newsletter - write articles about our Region for the newsletter, such as interviews with area breeders, profiles of area cats, profiles of area shows, photographs, etc.

  5. Newsletter Availability. Upon motion by Eve Russell, seconded by Eldon Smith and unanimously carried, it was determined that a non-subsidized newsletter should be available at shows for circulation, beginning with the minutes of this meeting. Regional Newsletter Coordinator Diane Crowe (810) 731-6123 will be happy to accommodate any contributions.

  6. 1999 Regional Show and Beyond. Our 1999 Regional Show is again scheduled in Columbus, Ohio. Those in attendance expressed a strong desire to see it moved to various areas throughout the Region. Upon motion by Carol McCutcheon, seconded by Eve Russell and unanimously carried, it was decided to move the Regional Show from year to year, with input from a planning committee. Wilma Van Scoyk was acknowledged for her great job on the Regional Awards and everyone agreed that our '98 trophies were exceptional.

  7. Regional Boundaries. Director Watson suggested a poll to find out if our regional boundaries should be restructured, with the results regarding the Great Lakes Region presented to the CFA Boundary Committee. Our clubs and individuals should research what we feel we want our region to be made of. Faye Mullins volunteered to chair such a committee. Monica Zehnder men-tioned that a good example would be the six or so breeders/exhibitors from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan who generally show in Region 6 and sometimes drive 14+ hours to attend Great Lakes Region functions, although they are proud to be in Region 4.

  8. New Business. Director Watson expressed a desire to see everybody feel a part of our Region and think of fun things the Region can do. Diana Barth will check out purchasing a digital camera for the Region, and everybody and their clubs were encouraged to purchase disposable cameras to take pictures at their shows for submission to Vicki Lanham.

Upon motion by Val Smith, seconded by Eve Russell and unanimously carried, the meeting was adjourned at 6:05 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
RACHEL ANGER
Regional Secretary
