Treasurer's Report
The Budget Committee met and worked out a budget for the 99-00 fiscal year. One significant change was the decision to bring both the yearbook operations & publicity into Central Office. Mrs. Fuller also proposed several action items:
- The following registration services would be increased from the current $7 to $8: litter registrations, individual registrations when done at the time of litter registration, transfer of ownership, or corrected certificate. Anew category of individual registrations would be created: "pre-paid registration", which would permit payment of the individual registration fee (at the $8 fee) at the time of litter registration without submitting a kitten name or new owner name. Instead of a 'blue slip', a different color slip would be returned to indicate that the registration fee has already been paid so no additional fee would be required when the kitten is first named & registered. Kittens in the litter not prepaid or registered at the time of litter registration would continue to be issued a 'blue slip'; when blue slips are sent in later for individual registration, a $10 fee would apply. This system would encourage breeders to register/prepay individual kittens at the time of litter registration without requiring final selection of name, etc. until later. The prepaid fee has a 3-year expiration. This will take effect 1/1/00.
- The show insurance will be increased to $75. This is strictly a pass-thru cost; CFA makes no profit on this insurance but tries not to lose on it either. This will be for all shows held after 7/1/99. Previously licensed shows will be billed the difference.
The final result on the 1998 International Show in Kansas City was a profit of $15,000 with a $5000 donation to the Winn Foundation. The 1999 International Show budget has been revised to reflect confirmation of more than $30,000 in corporate sponsorship thus, currently showing a profit of $28,300 net of a $5,000 Winn donation.
Domestic & International Clubs
No new domestic clubs were accepted. The following International clubs were accepted:
- Nika Feline Centr -
Moscow, Russia
- Panthera International Cat Club -
Moscow, Russia
The International Division has been further subdivided into 4 sectors: European, Asian, South America, and Russia/Ukraine. This was done to allow the fastest expansion by those clubs, which operates under the same Winners & Grand point system as North America.
Central Office Operations
Of note to the GLR, the National Siamese Cat Club, a region #1 club, was given permission to hold a show on 6/3-4/00 in Rochester, NY as there was no other GLR show scheduled on that date.
Breed Councils
At the meeting with the Breed Council Secretaries on Thursday, they volunteered to raise Breed Council dues to $25 with additional memberships going from $5 to $10. A check box on the membership form will have you indicate if you wish a full set of standards plus other things.

Often clubs come up with ideas to expedite or streamline
their shows, and before long it catches on and become
the norm. So, at the suggestion of Martha Auspitz, we will
attempt to be even more efficient by placing this column in
our newsletter.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions,
please share them with us.
The 2001 Annual in Pittsburgh is fast approaching. All clubs need to be thinking about their contributions to the delegate bags.
If you need ideas, need to see catalogs, or need to coordinate projects, please contact Donna or Brenda Shaffer at 419-382-3852. If you have an idea for something to be included in the delegate bags, feel free to use the SUGGESTION BOX above to bring it to our attention.
Let's make this the best annual ever!!
The Donations Committee would like to thank all of those who donate dprizes for the Regional Show. The raffle was a huge success, raising $1,320.00
We would like to make the Qualifier Show raffle even bigger and better. We are asking once again for raffle donations. Donations can be given to Nancy Mikita, Barbara Moore or Mariane Toth.
I am in receipt of an application for Great Lakes Great Cats Club to be considered for approval at the October Board meeting for membership in the GLR. It's breed interest is "Maine Coon breed activities only" with the intent to 'sponsor an annual specialty ring, operate a web site, hold meetings to discuss club business and Maine Coon health, welfare, showing, breeding and standards issues.'" This club intends to "promote existing clubs" shows by holding meetings and sponsoring specialty rings at them. We will likely work with many different clubs over time, in seeking to provide specialty ring activity and promote sportsmanship and fellowship among Maine Coon breeders and exhibitors in the Great Lakes Regional area. We do not wish to sponsor our own shows." The club presently lists 84 members.
If you have opinions regarding the efficacy or necessity of this club, please contact me with your thoughts. Thanks.
In the past, it has been a practice for Show Secretaries to send a copy of the show catalog to the Regional Director or GLR designee.
CLUBS ONLY NEED TO SEND AN EXHIBITOR LIST TO THE REGIONAL TREASURER!
This is in the Show Rules, so please save your money on postage.
SHOW RULE 16.11
The show secretary must
send a copy of the catalog
exhibitor list with complete
addresses to the regional
director or his/her designee
within one week after the
close of the show.

Once again the GLR gathered to celebrate our cats and our successes. This year the Regional Awards Banquet was held in Columbus, OH. Kudos to all involved!
Jackie Taylor - the Holiday Inn facility bent over backwards to insure a successful event. Jackie worked with the banquet manager to see that we had everything we need, from tables to audio-visual. She chose the menus and each entrée was delicious.
Wilma Van Scoyk - our Regional treasure. Each year Wilma has ordered the awards and rosettes, a huge job in itself. But then, she presses each rosette, checks each award for correctness, gets them to the banquet, and personally, directs their display and distribution.
Set up Committee - a huge thanks to all whose expertise made it all run smoothly: Beth Holly, Martha Auspitz, Ronna Colilla and niece, Wilma Van Scoyk.
Karen Lawrence - put together our awards booklet replete with photos. We had a great reponse and Karen did a super job.
Brenda Wood - each year Brenda compiles a list and puts on screen the Grand Champions and the color awards. All are honored and yet, this method allows the banquet to run smoothly. She also gathers and collates the Distinguished Merit, Top Kitten, Top Premiership, and Top Cat awards. This year it ran like clockwork.
Bethany Colilla - we have watched Bethany grow up in the cat fancy where we knew she could do any job she was given. Saturday night Bethany put on a different hat and played the violin during the cocktail hour. What a delight to see another facet.
Ken & Vickie Lanham - they do a great job with the "On the Road" presentation. It's a job they love coordinating and it sure shows in their dedication.
Gail Moser & Sandy Douglas - they were in charge of decorations. The floral arrangements were spectacular and filled the room with their fragrance. They also decorated the arch for the photographs.
The Presenters - Rachel Anger, Norman Auspitz, Loretta Baugh, Diana Doernberg, Edna Field, and Karen Lawrence all did a great job with a tough task - reading the cats' names!
Bev O'Neill, Faye Mullins, & Dawn Skupin - our banquet reservation and seating people. What a job! Thanks for putting it all together.
Planning Committee - provided a free drink ticket to all attendees.
And last, but by no means least:
Rick Hoskinson - The show would not go on without a manager & Rick worked long &
hard to give us a successful regional show. Some of his duties were
working with other members of the show committee to see the jobs were
getting done, filling in when jobs were undone, arranging last minute
hotel rooms for our group, provided showhall security until the hall was
locked for the night (he missed the banquet in order to do this), judges'
transportation Sunday evening, & all the zillions of other details that go
into making a show.
There may be people I missed. Please know that the banquet success was because all did their jobs well. You made the region shine.
SINCERE THANKS!
Best Kept Secrets
Rachel Anger and Diana Barth feted Gary Veach with a surprise 40th birthday celebration. At the end of the "On the Road" the last slide was of a young, handsome man & a lovely woman. The man was none other than the "before" Gary. Through some verbal interplay we got him to come up front and than called Rachel & Diana who presented him with a CFA tie tack.
Omar Gonzales had told Carol McCutcheon that if she got a National Award on her kitten that he would wear a pink roller in his hair.
(A story Carol tells on herself that during a blind date her date refused to make eye contact with her, talked over her head, and in general, barely acknowledged she was there. When he walked her to his car she caught a glimpse of herself in the glass. There she was with a pink roller still stuck in her head.)
When Omar didn't attend the banquet, Carol thought she was home free. Little did she know!!
The room was full of pink rollers and when she got her award everyone had a pink roller displayed in his hair - Bill Lee, Curly (had to glue it on), Loretta (who was making the presentation). She had no clue. We got her good!
Next year the Awards Banquet will be in Buffalo hosted by the Buffalo Cat Fanciers. They are planning a wonderful night, which I'm sure, will have a few surprises. It is my fondest hope that everyone wil come & help us celebrate. It is a time when we can come together & rejoice in our cats, our achievements, our region - a GREAT place to show.

The Great Lakes Region established an assessment several years ago to help raise funds for the Annual. Since we get a turn at the
Annual every seven years, the figure of $.50 per entry for show producing clubs was established. Recently, our Canadian clubs had the fee reduced to $.25 per entry to help with the difference between the Canadian and US currencies.
I know many of you are wondering why we even have the assessment fee except for the Annual. Certainly, it does take a fair amount of money to host an Annual. This can be done with as little as $30,000.00 upwards to $60-70,000.00. A lot depends on how much a Region wants to spend on the Annual and the location of the Annual.
The Great Lakes Region has also used the assessment fee to help offset the cost of our Regional Awards and our Regional Shows.
The Great Lakes Region routinely spends close to $9,000.00 each year for the beautiful awards presented to our Regional Winners. Another area the Great Lakes Region covers is the costs for both the Regional and Qualifier shows. Other regions have clubs host the Regional Awards Show and even put on additional shows as fundraisers for the regions. We have also made generous donations to organizations in memorium for cat fanciers in the Great Lakes Region as well as general donations. Without the assessment, we would really be "hustling" to host the 2001 Annual in Pittsburgh.
This is not to say that we do not get money from other areas. We have received many generous donations from clubs over the years for rosettes, raffle prizes, and for miscellaneous show expenses. We have many individuals who not only support the region with entries, but make additional donations.
No matter what the amount, I am always grateful to the clubs and individuals who go the extra mile to give additional support to the
Great Lakes Region.
As many clubs will attest, I do bill on a quarterly basis. I e-mail Allene Tartaglia at the CFA Central Office at the end of each quarter. Allene then sends me a listing of clubs held in the Great Lakes Region with the number of catalog entries. I then calculate the assessment and mail the bill to the Club Secretary. The Club Secretary is the contact person that CFA uses for official mailings, so that is the reason for the bill going to the Secretary rather than the Treasurer. IF ANY CLUB WOULD RATHER HAVE THE TREASURER RECEIVE THE ASSESSMENT BILLING DIRECTLY, PLEASE CONTACT ME!!! If I do not have the current Secretary of record, please notify of any change.
ALSO, since I hate to bill; and it does cost the Great Lakes Region extra money-I will gladly take checks back from any shows that I attend. It does save some time and money for the clubs and the region. Clubs should routinely figure the club assessment as part of their show budgets. If a club is unable to pay the assessment, please let me know. We may be able to work out a payment schedule or clubs can even add the additional $.50 or $.25 to the entry fee for the exhibitors.
We do have a few delinquent clubs, and I hope that we can get the assessment fee from the clubs to 100%. I do not want to resort to posting a list of delinquent clubs in the newsletter. It is the clubs and the exhibitors who help put "Great" in the Great Lakes Region, and I am proud of our region!
You can phone me at (513)-874-4708. I do have voice mail on my home phone, and I return calls as promptly as possible. My fax number is (513)-874-7332, and my e-mail address is brucejohnson@fuse.net. My home address is 5897 Flaig Drive, Fairfield, OH 45014.
Please contact me if you have any questions regarding the Show Assessment Fee or other questions for the Treasurer. With your continued support, we can maintain a healthy financial status.

Hi Everyone,
This is GRC, NW Rabeau's Sunny Delite saying "Thank You" one last time for the support all you Region 4 exhibitors gave me this year. I had some tough times including a light fixture and bulb exploding while I was being judged and I wouldn't have made it through without your support.
I have been busy siring . . . three litters so far. My first litter was a litter of one, a male called "Chester". By the time you read this he should be going into Adult class. He's somewhat of a Jester in the ring, hope you give him the same courtesy you gave me. Still waiting on the outcome of the second and third litters. Again my heart goes out to all my supporters and Good Luck in the upcoming season!

In a time of declining registrations, we must all do our part to assure the success of our shows. Our judges are referred to as "ambassadors for CFA" but are they the only ones? Remember your first venture into the cat fancy. I know I was filled with enthusiasm but also a little scared. Everyone seemed to know one another and I was a bit on the outside. How can we change that? We are losing exhibitors to other associations but is it only because we don't give them a place to show their cats? I don't think so. In several conversations I've had, the overwhelming reason is the friendliness and camaraderie. It is only natural that people wish to feel welcome. Disposable income is at an all time high and the cat fancy is competing with many hobbies for those dollars. Each and every one of us must become "ambassadors" in order to promote CFA. Every person on the show committee, ring clerks, master clerks and exhibitors, I urge you to be aware of your words and your attitude and how this might/could effect another person. Let's try to make it easy for new exhibitors who may not know of all the ins and outs. Remember you, too, walked into a show hall for the very first time!

Many of you who attend the Mid-Michigan Cat Fanciers' shows know of the tremendous work done by the HHP exhibitors in rescuing & placing cats. Fran DeYoung & her Mother Ann have rescued countless animals that have been fostered in their home until adoptions are made. Now they are dedicated to seeing Rainbow Pet Care Center become a reality. A California club puts on a show in Las Vegas and donates their proceeds to the no-kill shelters there. As of 1998, they had donated over $50,000 - an impressive commitment. If you have a few extra dollars or a club wishing to support a cause, I urge you to consider the Center. Inquiries can be directed to 616-744-8512 or 616-722-6821.
RAINBOW PET CARE CENTER
PO Box 0992
Muskegon, MI 49443-0992
Rainbow Pet Care Center has been in the works for about 4 years.
It's just been in the past year or so that things have really started
to come together. The paperwork is finished, a contractor has offered
to build a building once we have land, and we have many people who
want to volunteer their time and energy to care for the pets we hope
to adopt out. Since this is planned to be a nokill shelter, those that
aren't adopted will have a home at the shelter.
In addition to the no-kill shelter, it is planned that a student vet will
be with us to help with nonlife-threatening problems, and a regular
vet will donate his time for neutering pets. We plan to have an operating
room with a recovery room attached. Pet owners will be able to drop off
their pet for neutenng and pick them up later rather than having one person
bring a load to the vet and pick them up the next day as is now done.
Several rooms are planned: a visiting room, a craft sale room, a maternity
room,- a cat/kitten room, a dog/puppy room, and a misc. pet room
(for those misplaced ferrets, birds, etc.).
Eventually we hope to have enough room so that we can have a Greyhound
Rescue center included.
Funding will be through Thursday night BINGO, crafts and baked goods sales
at the Muskegon Mall, car washes, and yard sales. Donations, of course,
will always be welcome. Checks can be made payable to Rainbow Pet Care
Center and sent to the above address.
As our motto states: "There is HOPE at the end of the Rainbow."
Please help fill the pot with hope.
